Designing the next generation in rear-end closure modules for a more connected and integrated car

For the autonomous, connected car, Plastic Omnium is developing innovations in complex rear-end modules that integrate radars, sensors and signature lighting.

Plastic Omnium’s next-generation rear-closure solution – the Smart Tailgate – boasts cutting-edge functionalities as well as onboard intelligence. Rear lighting is integrated behind a transparent outer panel with innovative decoration for seamless and daring design. 

Hidden sensors and antennas provide advanced Human Machine Interface (HMI) functions and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication for better obstacle detection. This new communication medium also enables information to be exchanged between drivers or between automated vehicles and their direct environment – whether on driving modes, real-time traffic, safety information or shared mobility data.

And what’s more, Smart Tailgate is both cost efficient and sustainable. With four times fewer components than metal substitutes, it weighs up to 30% less, contains 20% recycled carbon fibres and produces a staggering 30% fewer emissions versus metal

The prototype has undergone fully functional validation tests, and technologies are ready for market, with potential serial applications as soon as 2025.
